Sausage with Sauerkraut

Sausage with sauerkraut, not my typical recipe. Sauerkraut is a prebiotic, so it’s really good for your gut health. While shopping in the north of the city, where the upscale supermarkets are located, I found this huge bottle of imported German sauerkraut. Sauerkraut and sausages sounded pretty tasty to me. Argentine style chorizo is more like a German sausage than a Mexican chorizo, the beer store across the street stocks Heineken, Dutch sounds like deutsch, so again close enough.

I forgot to take a photo of the caraway seeds, so just imagine a generic spice jar.

Argentine Chorizos with Sauerkraut

  • 2 cups sauerkraut (drained)
  • 1½ cups cherry tomato
  • 1 cup onion (diced small)
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 19½ ounces chorizo
  • 12 ounces beer
  1. Brown chorizo
  2. combine ingredients in slow cooker
  3. cook on low for 3 hours

To make this recipe paleo or gluten free substitute wine or water for the beer.  The amounts can be varied to your tastes,  use more sausage with more sauerkraut, you can add apple to it for a sweet note. It was just as good reheated as it was the first day. Have some sauerkraut your tummy will thank you!

  1. I love sauerkraut. Sausage not so much. Well, unless it is chicken-mango sausage, and I have not seen any of those since I left Salem.

    • Steve, no reason you couldn’t cook something else instead of the sausage. Some chunks of beef? I’d say you could make your own chicken mango sausages. It’s not like you couldn’t find mangoes or ground chicken. However, unless you are really devoted to the idea of sausage making, I’d just make patties. Hmmm, chicken and mango really sounds like it has possibilities, we’re not big chicken fans here, tastes too much like iguana.

    I bought a big container of the tomatoes at Costco, which means I have to keep finding ways to use them up. I keep them on the counter so that I see them and snack on them, LOL. The broth on this was really good, enjoy!

    Peter and I like sausage and sauerkraut a lot and have it quite often. We’re going to try your recipe next time. The cherry tomatoes will be a new addition for us.
