Let there be light

Spinning out of control the globe flung itself downwards, shattering like Humpty Dumpty never to be put back together again. Hearing it’s explosive finish, we hurried into the dining room to find it scattered over the table.I have the world’s best bad luck, no one had been eating at the time. Our bedroom ceiling fan came crashing onto down onto the foot of our bed during the day, once again no one was in the room. Since this is about ceiling fans not cars, I will save the story about my clutch cable for another day. I have what I call mitigated bad luck, if it had happened to someone less fortunate it would have been worse. Just call me Lucky. When we were remodeling our house, I insisted that I wanted a pretty ceiling fan with a light. After pricing my dream fan, we bought a Hampton Bay fan at Home Depot. It had the requisite light. Two important ...

before and after photos, the chandelier so far

This is the floor tile, this shot includes both shades of green on the floor. I don’t know if they replaced tiles or just didn’t notice that they weren’t exactly the same shade when they were laid. the hurricane lamps before and after the entire chandelier before the chandelier after painting The dangles look worse with the nail polish so I will be cleaning them with acetone and figuring out something else to do with them.

almost done….maybe

I got the easy part done on the chandelier. After Husband helped me take it apart as much as possible, I finished painting it today.Miguels only had one colour of glass paint plus black simulated leading for stained glass style painting, so I went with plan B.Having reviewed my acrylic paints before going shopping and found that my collection was very limited, I went overboard buying 17 tiny jars of liquid acrylics in an assortment of likely colours. Luckily, there were still two dozen tiny plastic condiment cups in my paint box, left over from a previous paint project which I filled half full with white glue ( from the half gallon jug that I bought because you can’t ever have too much white glue), into that I mixed in approximately 1/4 teaspoon of paint. In order to check the transparency and final colour, I painted stripes on a glass jar. After reviewing the results, I further mixed some custom ...

identity crisis

I have been looking at ideas online. Searching for colour palettes to use on my chandelier project. Plus ideas for my recibidor (entry hall/parlor) and I have come to the conclusion that I really am more Victorian/Bohemian/Gypsy inspired than a bright tropical Mexican theme. Oh don’t get me wrong, I have a couple of bright cheery Mexican spaces in our house. The terraza especially is full of colour but I don’t think I want to do the recibidor like that. I want an eclectic space, an exotic space but not so stage set Mexican, it doesn’t go with me, and it certainly isn’t what Yucatan looks like.Whenever I find myself immersed in these big projects, I often discover that my original path leads me to another direction all together. After all the best part of having a plan is knowing when you deviate from it. The view changes as you near the goal.Speaking of goals, USA is playing Mexico at ...

Just use a little imagination

You are just going to have to trust me on this one. Use a little imagination and remember that I tend towards Bohemian and over the top.The chandelier project is evolving. Husband and I checked out the hanging lamps at Home Depot, there wasn’t anything that I really liked for less than $1,500 and even those weren’t great. I asked about lamp kits but they don’t carry them anymore. The clerk directed me to a store on Paseo Montejo that might have the kits. I didn’t even bother going there. While I was at the IWC retreat, one of the members mentioned that she had a glass chandelier that she bought in Monterrey (Mexico) which she wasn’t using. It has two arms, not exactly right.Today, after Crafts, Husband and I went to one of the used furniture shops. There, I found the perfect chandelier. It was $1400 which is about $110 usd at today’s rate. It is a beauty, five arms, ...
