Going on a medical leave of absence

I have a doctor’s note and everything! Writting a blog is an interesting experience, I have made many friends through this medium and grown as a writer. I have around 3000 regular readers, in the blogosphere is a drop in bucket, but which I am so grateful for. I debate how much is oversharing and how much to keep back. It’s a fine line.  Rather than just not post for awhile and leave you all wondering what happened. Here it is, the short version is: On October 8th I went in for a surgical breast biopsy and I have DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in my right breast. The good news is that it’s 100% curable by surgery. The bad news is that means on Wednesday, they are going to remove my right breast. It totally sucks. I have cried and I’m crying right now. However, as cancer goes, this is pretty straightforward. I will be in the hospital for ...

The 80-20 food rule, a cure for Orthorexia nervosa

Apparently there aren’t enough eating disorders, I discovered a new one, Orthorexia nervosa,   a term which literally means  fixation on righteous eating.  I totally get it,I understand how easy it would be to slip into this sort of behavior. Which is why I firmly believe in the 80-20  food rule. The 80-20 food rule in it’s simplest form is  eat according to plan 80% of the time but don’t worry if you deviate the other 20% . This doesn’t mean eat peanuts if they are going to put you into anaphylactic shock, even if you always carry an epipen. It does mean, if you’re at Abuela’s  house and she offers you her specialty, croquetas de pollo ;don’t start lecturing her about how she should substitute  pork rinds for the bread crumbs instead eat one or two. It’s okay. You don’t want to be that person.  You know who I mean. It’s one thing is to ask for extra vegetables instead of ...

My voice, blog voices vblog meme

Leila from the Three Dresses Project just posted this vlog meme, My Voice. I thought it was really cool. I’m trying new things these days so I decided to give making a video a try. While my microphone works just fine with Skype it seems to be deficient when I use Movie Maker. First here is the list of words: aunt, route, wash, oil, theater, iron, salmon, caramel, fire, water, sure, data, ruin, crayon, toilet, New Orleans, pecan, both, again, probably, spitting image, Alabama, lawyer, coupon, mayonnaise, syrup, pajamas, caught The questions are as follows: What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball? What is the bubbly carbonated drink called? What do you call gym shoes? What do you say to address a group of people? What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs? What do ...

Artist at work

One of my fellow art students took some photos in class.                 Work in progress. I have to take a photo of the finished painting. I did this painting last year but never really liked it. I was trying to make it look like an old time sepia formal photograph. In my opinion, it looked too much like something that should be hung in the haunted mansion at Disneyland. Taking what I learned about under painting,I added some color to the painting. Now I like it, quite a bit, really. All the catrinas together, you can see my progress as an artist.

Too many wants

The virus is in retreat, I feel better. Well enough to get into trouble, but not healthy enough to dig my way out again. Husband got a new phone after I laundered my old one. He has been wanting one more like his palm device that he used to use, he really doesn’t call many people, but he wanted to use it for schedules etc. Liking the phone that he had, which had been mine for a brief while, we traded. He got a new super duper phone and I got one that I already understood. We were both happy. Have you ever noticed that when people discover a new thing that works for them, a diet, a new product, or a place to live, they want to share it? Husband has been badgering me to trade in my phone and buy one like his. Loving me and wanting me to have the best, he cannot understand my reluctance. It’s ...

Eating bad things

Our bathroom is in disarray, the painter never showed up and I haven’t felt up to going out and locating him or a replacement. In anticipation of painting, we removed all the shelves and only the most necessary things are left sitting on the built in ledge across the room from the sink. Rushing to get ready, I grabbed my toothbrush and the toothpaste without really looking. I went to flip the top and it didn’t flip. Being frazzled, I just ignored my puzzlement and twisted the top off. Juggling more than a few things as I walked to the sink, I managed to drop most of the tooth paste off the brush onto the floor. Sticking the brush into my mouth so to have my hands free to clean up the floor, I noticed an odd taste, instead of the overpowering minty freshness of Colgate, there was a hint of lavender. That is when I realized that I had ...

Still flying high

“A Call for Actors” showed up in my mailbox, the IWC newsletter, and on YoListo. Could it be that the universe was trying to get my attention? Outside of my family the thing that I miss the most is performing. At the IWC Halloween party, I did an impromptu sword dance which really brought home that fact. They asked for a resume of acting experience. I used to have one, but along with my professional CV, it didn’t make the move. I did my best to reconstruct my performance history. I agonized over it and hopefully it will fill the bill. Since most of my experience is historical re-enactment, I took time to explain each event rather than a bald, RPFN –monger, SPFN-monger,Goldrush! San Francisco!, Californio. That doesn’t tell you anything unless you know what a monger or a Californio is. Then there was the headshot. Traditionally, your headshot is an 8×10 to which you staple your CV so one ...

sleepy and grouchy

For the last week, I have been sleepy and grouchy. I’m sure it’s the lack of coffee. Ironically, one of the reasons that I decided to cut back was because I couldn’t sleep. However, I didn’t think that I would try to catch up on slumbers in one day. Take yesterday for example, I woke up at 4:30 and managed to stay in bed another hour. The monthly IWC meeting ran over time, but I found myself nodding off at noon! I had planned on doing some shopping on my way home, but asked a friend for a ride instead. However, Husband, had walked downtown to meet me and have lunch. After running a couple of errands, he suggested Las Vigas for lunch. I countered with Madame Cameron because they have a seafood buffet. I figured it would be easy to get a wheat free meal there. Having waited too long to eat, I was grouchy. We opted for the ...

A new fork in the road

Filled with enthusiasm from attending Malcom Massey’s talk on e-publishing, I mentally went over the possibilities. I could self publish a book! What kind of book? My Griselda stories? a cookbook? The best blog posts from this blog? A novel? Then I thought about painting, fixing our house, crafts and all the other things that I do. So the book idea goes on the back burner, it’s not time to go down that road yet.

Here is my prototype for my tunic top. I raised the waistline to make it empire. The cap sleeves just looked silly by the way. Instead of using facings I made bias binding. This is some fabric that I bought and kept saving for just the right project. I tend to do that, buy fabric and not use it. Sort of like all those blouses and sweaters you find in Grandma’s closet that she is saving for “good”. I need to adjust the shoulder a little bit but other than that the fit is pretty good. The next one will be a tad shorter and have a bit of trim. I think I might interface the belt to make it crisper since it looks like it got scrunched up in the photo.
