The battle of the wall, day one

As I stepped out our front door, I noticed a pair of youngsters intently watching a third. I walked over and in my best stage voice, very loud but not actually shouting, I demanded,”Just why do you think it’s okay to write on my wall? Do you write on your mother’s walls at home?”. Needless to say, the young girl turned to me, she couldn’t have been more surprised if the wall had spoken to her itself. She stammered, “I wouldn’t have written on it if I had known it was your wall.” I wanted to ask her whose wall was it okay to write on? Did she think the wall had grown out of the sidewalk? Having dealt with pre-teens during my short stint as a school bus driver, I knew that sort of dialogue was fruitless, so instead, I asked her name and got her word that she would not write on my wall anymore. Furthermore, she would ...

The key issue

Why the lack of keys? I watch our neighbors come home from work and pound on the door to be let in. These aren’t little kids, the girl is almost done studying at the Universary and the boy is an attorney. It isn’t just them, my other neighbors all seem to have only one key to the door, no matter how many people live there. Recently, we heard a car alarm going off. It would go off and then stop, then go off again. It isn’t unusual to see the owner leaning against his car oblivious to the annoying noise of his alarm blaring. He knows that there is no problem, so he isn’t concerned it seems. Finally the frequency and generally annoying quality of having a car alarm sounding just outside our gate, drove us out to complain. There we saw a group of people gathered around our friend’s VW. Katy had lost her keys, and the Locksmith was ...

dealing with the noise

I remember a conversation that Husband and I had with some friends when we first moved here. These people are from New York City and we,as you know used to live in a suburban city and prior to that in a cabin in the forest. One of us had complained about the tremendous amount of noise here. Our friend looked incredulously at us and stated “I don’t understand what you mean. It quiets down at night.”. Wow, they came from place where it is never quiet, not even in the wee hours of the evening. It’s all a matter of perspective isn’t it? Husband tells the story of when he first moved back to town. He had been living in the boonies and moved to a house on a third of an acre in a small town. He would hear people in the next door neighbor’s yard and think they were in the house. When we lived in the canyon, ...

Rainy day people

It’s hard to blog about what I have been doing since I haven’t been doing anything! We got sick again on New Year’s Day. Some nasty stomach thing, Husband ran a bottle of champagne across the street with our regrets. And really, we like the parties they have across the street. It’s been cold lately, windy and rainy! We actually closed all the doors and windows last night, and still woke up to leaves in the house! This is not the rainy season, but we now know that the dry well we had made works perfectly well. If it rains a lot the water was entering the back door, it wasn’t draining as fast as it was pouring down, so we had a hole dug, about 3 feet by 2 feet down to bedrock, which is about 2 1/2 feet in front of the back door, we then filled it with rock and gravel. We had the ironmonger out to ...

Free Music

I am sitting at my computer with all the doors and windows closed, listening to the music from the Beer Store across the street. I don’t know what gets into Luis, but he will just crank up the stereo sometimes, this bout started just around mid Month, we’re hoping it will stop soon, or we will need to have words. It isn’t that his music is bad, his stereo is actually pretty good too, it’s that I don’t always want to listen to it. When we were having the front of our house redone we toyed with the idea of having solid glass windows put on our house, in front of the wooden ones. It looks awful unless done well, and to do it well requires money. Also the most noise resistant is permanently shut plate glass, which means no breeze. The fixed glass also looks better than having sliders of some sort or another. Mèrida is pretty noisy, I ...
